Honeymoon #2 research!

Dan is the traveler in our family, he researches and dreams up new places to go. All. Day. Long. So when it came time for our honeymoon, I gave my opinions, but I left it in his very capable hands and with destination numero uno, he did very well. Right after the wedding we flew down to Playa Del Carmen for a few days of relaxation, and it was nice. I probably wouldn’t go back, all inclusive resorts seem like a thing of the past (drunken college days when I could drink anything and not get a hangover) or the future (taking children to a beach/pool to run around and be kids), but it was nice to sit on a beach with a cocktail for a couple days.

Now that we’re back and the wedding has passed, I promised Dan that I would help in the research for our actual honeymoon…Thailand!! We knew early on that we wanted to go somewhere around the world and to a once in a lifetime destination. We went back and forth between Thailand and Bora Bora, choosing Thailand in the end because it would give us more of our type of vacation. We aren’t sit on the beach and “relax” type of people, we get antsy and need more stimulation than that, there is nothing wrong with those vacations, they just aren’t our speed.

So we booked our tickets with Dan’s plethora of miles on Cathay Pacific (in business class!!) to Hong Kong where we will spend a couple days seeing the city and (trying) to get acclimated to the time change. We’ll then fly to Chiang Mai to trek with elephants, then off to relax on an island down south, then over to Bangkok to finish up the trip! It’s going to be a whirlwind, but that’s how we travel best!

Like I promised, I would help with the planning, but this is harder than it looks! We’re probably only going to get here once in our lifetime, so we want to make sure we get the best out of our trip, and hopefully not make any mistakes. I think that the toughest decision that we are trying to make is which island to go to! I know that you can’t go wrong, but I’m not a great decision maker. Well, we’re narrowing it down and getting into the groove of planning city by city and I cannot wait for October to travel to Asia! (although we have two other trips planned between now and then. It’s going to be a busy summer/fall!)

If you’ve been to Thailand, what did you do and where did you go? I’m looking for suggestions! Help! 🙂

WooHoo! We booked our trip! As I wrote in an earlier post, we were deciding between Thailand and Bora Bora and we decided on Thailand! After much discussion, we thought it would be better suited to us. While relaxing on a beach sounds and feels amazing, it’s not something we want to do for ten days; we need some city and fast paced living! Plus, who doesn’t want to go see the temples of Bangkok and Chiang Mai and play with the elephants! We will be traveling to Hong Kong via Cathay Pacific in business class! Yes, that means we get to lay down for our 15+ hours flight! We are very fortunate and savvy, and Dan was able to save enough airline miles for us to be able to experience this.

Here are some of the sites we will be able to enjoy while in Chiang Mai and Bangkok

We haven’t decided on an island retreat yet, but Koh Samui is at the top of the list!

We are so excited and can’t wait until next October for our trip! We will take a short trip after the wedding to decompress, but this will be our big trip for the year!

Honeymoon…I DO!

I think the best part of wedding planning is the end result…the honeymoon! Ok, well, the marriage is the best part, but how much fun is a trip to an exotic locale? So much fun, that Dan and I have decided to take TWO trips! We thought about it, and we will take a long weekend trip to someplace close and easy to get to/from, right after the wedding and then a few months later, we will go halfway around the world to Bora Bora or Thailand.

Our first plan was to do something different and have our guests vote for where we should take our trip to, but since we are traveling on points/miles (through strategic spending for our wedding), we need to book our airfare 330 days out. Yes, exactly 330 days, that is when the airlines open up flights for purchase/mile usage, so if this is your plan, make sure to pay attention to the dates of your prospective trip. If you want to sit together and sit in first class, then you will want to make sure to book as close to 330 as possible. Dan is taking care of all of these details, as he loves to figure out airline routes and travel itineraries.

Before deciding where we wanted to go, we each narrowed down our top three destinations and then narrowed it down again for two reasons:

1. Weather in various places of the world in October (month we want to travel). Here is a great article from The Knot, breaking down each month for the best places to visit. You might get a really great deal on a trip to Jamaica, but if it’s hurricane season, how great would it be? Always check your destinations’ weather pattern.

2. How active we want to be during our honeymoon. This is a big one that many couples forget. Do you want to sightsee all day, every day or would you rather sit on a beach and do next to nothing for your trip? If the former is more your feeling, then somewhere like Europe would be the place for you, but if you want to relax and take things easy, it might not be the best option.

So, now that we’ve decided on those items, it’s pretty much going to come down to what location has the best flight options for the miles we have. Which would you choose Thailand or Bora Bora?

Bora Bora

We can’t really go wrong either way!
